Michael Kroemer is a 1989 Cornwall high graduate but he never really left the schools – until he accepted a position as director of the athletic department in Roundout Valley, a job that starts in ten days.
Coach Kroemer is well known to students and parents of athletes for his upbeat humor on and off the playing field. An elementary school physical education teacher before heading to the high school, Kroemer has been the assistant wrestling coach and coached football and modified track.
He started teaching PE at Cornwall Elementary School at Lee Road, then moved to Willow Avenue Elementary School in 2003. He arrived at the high school in September 2008, where he put his playful way with words to work producing a weekly Green Dragon sports podcast that covered all the highlights of Cornwall schools’ sports. At Monday’s board of education meeting, chair Brendan Coyne remarked that he is going to miss Coach Kroemer’s entertaining banter as the announcer at football games. Board member Melanie Robinson-Mulroy, the former principal of the Lee Road school, recalled how Kroemer brought a lot of innovation to physical education. “He did things I never envisioned,” she said. “Our Halloween parade would be nothing without him. He was a lot of fun.
Coach Kroemer says that the new position is a great opportunity for him professionally, but that he will miss all of his friends and colleagues, teaching physical education, coaching, announcing and all the other odd jobs he has had over the years here in Cornwall.
