General News: Town Focus on Recreation, Pool
|

The snow is starting to melt and as thoughts turn to summer, the Cornwall town board is focusing on its recreation department.
On Monday, the board voted to move the recreation department to a new location, the former site of the town animal shelter. Councilwoman Mary Beth Greene Krafft, the board’s liaison to the recreation department, voted against the move. The small building behind town hall has been renovated for its new occupants.
Topping the agenda for the department is the future of the public pool right outside its new doors. A week ago at a town work session, supervisor Kevin Quigley questioned whether it was worth it to keep the pool open when only 20 or 30 people use it on a given day in the summer.
Last June, a massive leak closed the pool two days after it opened. The town paid nearly $14,000 to fix the leak and the pool never re-opened. Playground students and families used the pool at the New York Military Academy.
Now, supervisor Quigley says all of the pipes under the pool house need replacement and he wants to install at automated chemical feed system, a job estimated at $90,000.
After a discussion, the town board decided last week to fill the 55-year-old pool and see if it leaks as a first step toward determining its future.
Meanwhile, the town approved fees for pool use and the summer playground program at its meeting on February 9. The rates for season passes remain at $125 for a family, $75 for an individual and $35 for seniors. Day passes are now $4 for all residents, except seniors, who can use the pool for $2.
The cost of the six-week summer playground program went up for town residents, who will now pay $275 instead of $235 for the full day program. The morning program stays at $175. School district residents who don’t live in Cornwall will pay $400 for the morning and $500 for the full day program.

This article claims 20-30 people a day use the pool?? Maybe when the leak started and the pool was freezing, the attendance was much less. As someone whose family has used the pool every day in the summer for years, I can tell you there are at least 20 people any given hour at the pool, often more. I can't believe the pool has not yet been fixed! We thought the town was addressing the leak last summer. Please get this resolved and don't close the pool!

I aggree there ar many more than 20-30 people there on any given summer day. Maybe they counted at NYMA where my kids would not go because there are no sidewalks to get there!!!

nyma won't be available as a back up this year. The YMCA is going to be using the pool.
