CORNWALL, NY – On Tuesday, February 23rd, Colonel Mark Gagnon, Professor of Languages at West Point, will present the foreign film, Beyond Silence, with a brief pre-film lecture. The library has been fortunate to have Col. Gagnon lend his expertise to our foreign film nights since 2011, and there is always a terrific response from the public.
Beyond Silence, is a 1996 German film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It features a protagonist, Lara, who is raised by deaf parents. When Lara receives a clarinet as a gift, she discovers the world of music – a world in which her parents cannot follow. Imagine the frustration of being a gifted musician whose parents are literally unable to hear. In his lecture, Col. Gagnon will discuss how the director uses sound and image to tell Lara’s struggle for independence. He will also touch on other cultural aspects of the film, including daily rituals, rural vs. urban life, and human interactions, especially those between Lara and her parents as she ventures on her own path in life.
This is a drop-in event. For more information, please call 845-534-8282 and speak with Charlotte Dunaief.
