I read with great dismay about the decision by the Village and Town Board to allow government reps--in the next few days-- to round up and ship off to slaughter the baby goslings and all of their now-flightless families that have called Downing Park and the Village their home for countless seasons. When were the Public Hearings on this? Why the secrecy around this supposed year-long study suddenly going into action? We only find out about it in an article in the news--are these intelligent, social animals not worth more of our time and effort? What data have been used to assess how on earth these geese affect traffic at Stewart Airport? (How, incidentally, is it possible that all of the waterways near LaGuardia and Kennedy Airports have not been decimated of their geese populations if this were indeed the case?)
I doubt very much that killing the geese is our only option. I cannot believe that the Town and Village Boards did not question the necessity of this extreme measure or at least give a few minutes of their time to think of other ways to deal with this issue. For the goslings and their families to be shipped, for long distances without food or water, to their deaths, one would think our elected officials would have had the decency to at least hold a hearing to hear the public's opinion on the matter. What are they thinking? Please let them know now--before it's too late--that we have a say and we don't want the Cornwall geese killed!
Thank you,
The McGill Family
