Construction has begun on Kiryas Joel’s pipeline on County Route 44, though there are some who say that this violates a stop-order that the County Legislature passed last week.
Assemblyman James Skoufis has urged citizens to contact the County Executive’s office – at 845-291-2700, or via email at [email protected] – to demand that this issue be resolved.
Mr. Skoufis asserts that Kiryas Joel is not permitted to continue with construction until the DEC gives its approval, which has not happened yet.
The County Executive’s office has responded with a statement claiming that the resolution the Legislature passed “is simply an expression of the Legislature’s sentiment concerning the construction of the pipeline” and “is without any legally binding effect on the County of Orange.”
According to the County Executive’s office, no “stop work order or court order has been issued by the County or any other court.”
The statement goes on to accuse Legislator Donnery and Assemblyman Skoufis of “intentionally and irresponsibly” using the issue “to create chaos and concern for the people of Orange County.”
In the meantime, Mr. Skoufis has plans to organize bus trips to take concerned citizens to the construction site to protest.
