General News: Many Already Afflicted with Flu this Winter

It’s not too late to get your flu shot, but don’t delay as many have already been afflicted this winter.
Orange County Commissioner of Health, Dr. Jean M. Hudson, warned that New York State is seeing widespread flu this season. The same is being seen in Orange County as evidenced by the real time data large health care providers in the County are providing to the Health Department. Most of the cases of influenza are being seen in people who have not been immunized.
“I’ve had my shot,” said County Executive Edward A. Diana, “and I urge you to protect yourself and your family by getting one too.”
“Fortunately, flu vaccine is plentiful this year,” added Dr. Hudson. “You can get it from your doctor, a pharmacy, or by calling 291-4300 at the Health Department.”
Flu vaccine is recommended for everyone over six months of age. For those between the ages of two and 49 who are fearful of needles, the nasal spray may be an option – check with your healthcare provider.
It’s important to remember, cautioned Dr. Hudson, the shot (in the arm) is a killed vaccine and as such cannot give you the flu, but it does take about two weeks to work fully and some people get sick during that time.
Sadly, a non-immunized seven year old child from the New York metropolitan area died from flu recently.
