Last Tuesday, November 27, The Cornwall Lions Club and the Art and English departments of Cornwall Central Middle School presented “A Peace Poster Exhibit” in the community room of the Cornwall Public Library.
The event, which has been run by Lions Clubs throughout the globe for more than twenty-five years, is a contest which encourages students to present a view of a peaceful world through the medium of art. Those who win the contest at the local level may go on to participate in district, multiple district, and international levels.
“Imagine Peace” was the theme for this year’s contest.
This year’s first place winner was Samantha Shaw, with Jackie Prunier being awarded the second place spot. According to Michael Summerfield, club secretary of the Cornwall Lions, “The judges this year seem to think Samantha’s entry, based on their review of previous contest results, has a good chance of advancing in the judging process.”
Teachers from Cornwall Central Middle School were in attendance, including Mrs. Michelle Abels, Mrs. Gina Gagliano, whose students presented peace-themed essays, and Mrs. Gina Dianis, who acted as the primary contact for the club. She was the Art teacher who assisted students in the preparation of their posters.
According to Jimmy Lennon, who attended the event, everyone from the student participants to the people in the audience enjoyed a “great time.”
