If you have what is commonly referred to as an outside cat or cats, be careful about placing the cat food in any area outside your residence that is in close proximity to your home, particularly in the area of the entrances/exits, or you may inadvertently attract an animal or rodent that is undesirable or nuisance, especially if the feed or for that matter any type of food or leftovers, is placed out after sunset. Many marauders are nocturnal, and if they come out during the daylight they may be rabid.
You could not only attract stray or feral cats, but also entice squirrel, raccoons, wood rats, possum and skunk, to name but a few, and many of these might be hard to get rid of and can often be very persistent, not to mention combative in nature, when feeding.
Furthermore, you might come upon one or more of these creatures right outside your front, or back door, if that is where the feed/food/leftovers had been or was located, particularly skunk, which often do not shoo easily -> you may even get skunked or your door and entranceway might have a distinctive aroma for quite a while; skunk "juice" is sticky when dry and hard to remove from dogs, cats all material and fabrics, and yes even you, and may seem to have dissipated after awhile, but when it gets damp or wet it will again stink to holy heavens.
How do I know, I was foolish enough to put cat food right outside our front door, and when I tried to shoo away a skunk, I was unlucky enough to do nothing but irritate it, but I lucky enough to close the glass exterior door before it sprayed.
Believe me, I will never be so stupid as to put any type of an edible by the front door again!
I guess I was real lucky though, it could have been a bear knocking on my front door and I really don't think that a glass front exterior door would stop it if it was hungry enough to want to come inside, to get other treats or seconds.
Need I say more.
(see photos: before the skunking we thought these creatures were cute).
