From Edward A. Diana
Do you have a thing for numbers and like delving into the details? Do you actually enjoy the challenge of doing your taxes each year? If so, then the Orange County Office for the Aging wants you to consider volunteering as a TaxAide counselor for the coming tax season.
The Orange County Office for the Aging is seeking volunteer tax counselors to help seniors at a variety of TaxAide locations throughout Orange County. The free tax counseling program provides tax preparation services to County residents age 60 years and over from February until April each year. Last year, more than 2,000 seniors utilized this free service.
Volunteer tax counselors are needed in Cornwall, Middletown, Town of Wallkill, New Windsor, Port Jervis, Warwick, and Washingtonville.
“The assistance provided by the TaxAide volunteers is invaluable to our seniors,” said Orange County Executive Edward A. Diana. “Last year, it resulted in refunds of nearly $1 million and a savings on tax preparation fees of $1.5 million dollars. We are grateful to the many volunteers who donate their time and expertise in order to make this program a success each year. I look forward to having great volunteer support again for the coming tax season,” added Mr. Diana.
Volunteers are thoroughly trained in tax law and electronic filing by AARP and the IRS who co-sponsor the program. Training sessions begin November 15 and are available until January so that volunteers can become certified by the IRS after an examination. No volunteer works alone and new volunteers are teamed with experienced counselors.
Any adult, of any age, with an accounting, banking, taxation or business background, or just an interest in tax preparation, with a desire to help community seniors is welcome to volunteer for TaxAide. Orange County’s TaxAide Program is administered by the Office for the Aging which recruits volunteers, publicizes the program, and sets up sites county-wide.
Individuals interested in volunteering should contact Anne Coon at 845.615.3705 to sign up for a training program.
