Ellsworth's Avengers: The 44th New York Regiment and the American Civil War
a presentation by Dr. Bruce Eelman
On Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012 the public is invited to Cornwall Public Library to hear Dr. Bruce Eelman, Associate Professor of History, Siena College, give a presentation entitled “Ellsworth’s Avengers: The 44th New York Regiment and the American Civil War”. The program, the fourth event in the Civil War Sesquicentennial lecture series at Cornwall Public Library, will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s community room.
Dr. Eelman will focus on how the 44th New York Regiment offers an opportunity to examine the military, political, and social experience of war both from a New York and a national perspective. Personal correspondence and other primary sources will be used to connect the daily life of the common soldier to the wider issues of the Civil War. There will also be some discussion of the post-war world of veterans and commemoration of the regiment's service.
Bruce Eelman is an Associate Professor of History at Siena College in Loudonville, New York. Professor Eelman received his Ph.D. in Civil War-Era History from the University of Maryland. He teaches courses on the Civil War and Nineteenth-Century America and has taken students to Antietam, Gettysburg, and Fredericksburg. His first book, Entrepreneurs in the Southern Upcountry (University of Georgia, 2008) explored the economic and social worlds of a southern community during the Civil War Era.
This program is supported by a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities and by Cornwall Public Library Foundation. Registration is not required. Further lectures in the Civil War Sesquicentennial Series at Cornwall Public Library are planned for the fall.
Contact the library with any questions, at 534-8282.
