Due to rain last weekend this event is rescheduled to Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 10 am.

It’s prettier than kudzu, the plant that ate the south, but just as destructive. It’s a climbing vine with triangular leaves and a prickly stem that kills trees and other vegetation by burying them and cutting off sunlight. It grows at a rate of 25 feet per season. Unchecked, it can drape trees and bushes with a feathery cloak that has them looking like some strange topiary nightmare. It’s called mile-a-minute weed.

And it’s here! On Shore road, about 500 feet east of the intersection with Wood Ave.–a small enough patch to be easily removed before it covers the landscape. The shallow roots are easily pulled up, but this needs to be done soon, before the berries ripen and make seeds.

If you’d like to meet this invader so you can recognize it in the future, show up on Shore road, about 500 feet east of the intersection with Wood Ave at 10AM on Saturday, September 15, 2012 with a pair of protective gloves and a large plastic bag or two. For this effort, the no parking rule will be waived. This may be our last chance.

For more information about this invasive species please read New York Invasive Species or visit the Mile a Minute Project of the Hudson Valley on Facebook.

Comments:

This just in: We can park by the road, if we all park on the same side. The patch of mile-a-minute plant we're after is on Shore Road near its intersection with Wood avenue. Heading east (toward Donahue Park) from that intersection, its near the second "no parking" sign on the right.
