Letters to the Editor: A View of Cornwall from Afar

April 26, 2012

To the Editor:

It was with sadness that I received the e-mail from you today announcing the imminent suspension of the News from Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson website and presumably of the regular e-mails of which I have become accustomed to reading.  I must confess, I am not quite sure how I got “invited in” in the first place.

You see, I neither live in Cornwall, nor did I grow up there…nor have I even visited.  I just randomly received one of your e-mails one day…and then they kept coming.  And after almost quickly deleting the first – as I do with so much unsolicited mail – but choosing instead to cast a quick glance, I became a little bit hooked on this small slice of Americana in upstate New York.  You see, I grew up in New Jersey (Berkeley Heights), and so I appreciate most things that share a bit of the East or otherwise remind me of where I’m from.  And, there is certainly some of that.

But Cornwall isn’t all “East Coast.”  (Nor am I, as I have resided in Columbus, OH for many years now.)  It is a view of small/moderate-sized town America.  With its patriotism – something very important to me – its history, its baseball (and other sports’) teams, its social outings, diverse educational and instructional features, its town government, its proud accomplishments, and yes, its squabbles, which are sometimes discussed in a forum that is very American in and of itself.   It is sad that I have read obituaries to find out more about the people there; but I was confident that in so doing I would be reading about others who were still very much among the living in this place.

Perhaps my favorite aspect of the e-mails was the photography.  Tom Doyle was a frequent contributor in this regard and his talent and the talents of others enabled me to observe the scenery and resources with which your area has been blessed.  I hope that your residents stop every now and then to appreciate what you have.

I know the pictures gave me a momentary respite on many occasions at work and provided a short escape from the stress that comes with my job.  In short, the e-mails have provided me a window into a place somewhere away from here, with which I have no affiliation, but which someday I would very much like to come see for myself based upon what I have been able to watch from afar.  Without any direct knowledge of this place, it has brought me many smiles and much warmth (though sometimes, depending upon the month, quite a chill, as well).  I could continue, but I have work, and you probably have other letters to read.

I am truly hopeful that someone else will assume this role through which you have made contributions beyond which you have known or probably even guessed.  Either way, I thank you.

Sincerely,
Brian Miller
Columbus, OH

Comments:

Thank you for your letter. You summed up our town perfectly. If you ever come to this town, I suggest you come around July 4th which is one of the best days of the year to travel here.

Dear Brian ~ What a heartfelt and eloquent letter; I am deeply touched reading it. I have just stumbled upon this newsletter. My husband grew up in Cornwall and I have visited.....simply put, it's a truly wonderful place.
