Members of Storm King Engine Company #2, Cornwall Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Transcare Paramedics and the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson Police were honored Monday, for their efforts to save a baby’s life back in January.
Fire Chief Chris O’Dell presented awards to the firefighters, ambulance corps members and one village police officer at the village board business meeting and told the story of their actions.
In the early morning hours of January 13, the Storm King Engine Company #2 responded to Taylor Place in the village for a report of a one-month-old baby that was not breathing. First on the scene were Firefighter Kurt Hahn, Firefighter Nancy Bryan, Probationary Firefighter Jeremy Asencio and Probationary Firefighter Kerry Hogan. Within minutes Cornwall Ambulance was on the scene with EMT Sean Patterson, Assistant Chief Chris Deitz and Driver Kevin Smith, followed closely by Transcare Paramedics Sean McMahon, EMT Tessa Pizzuto and Village of Cornwall Police officer John Pena.
The child was carried from the home in the arms of Firefighter Hahn and brought to St. Lukes Cornwall Hospital ER where the infant was successfully resuscitated. Denis Murphy, also from Transcare Paramedics, was cited for providing needed medical supplies to the ER. Unfortunately 18 hours later, the child passed away at Westchester Medical Center.
Officer Pena received a second award, Monday for his extra service to the village during the nine month period when the village board searched for a new chief of police.
Comments:
Way to go Kurt, Nancy, Jeremy, Kerry, Sean , Tessa and Officer Pena. How lucky we are to have such trained and dedicated volunteers when needed. God bless all of you and also the family of the infant.
