Letters to the Editor: Comment Period the Root of Democracy

March 29, 2012

To the Editor:

The lead sentence in the second paragraph of the story titled "Trustee Kane Denounces Smear Campaign" notes that "the meeting went by without incident, no one spoke during public comment periods and the board acted on the agenda in a business-like fashion." One is led to infer from this that the reporter's conclusion is that no comment from the public is a good thing.

This idea is detrimental to the whole process of democracy. I urge the citizens of this community to comment, at length, when possible, on the operations and behavior of this board of trustees and the choices they make. The consequences of not doing so result in projects like the village DPW fiasco. If you don't speak out, i can guarantee you that we will see - and pay for - more of them.

Mr. House - I am going to make the leap of faith that you are urging people to comment during public comment session at the Village meetings, and not on this website. For that to happen people have to be interested enough to arrange their schedules around going to the meetings.

I agree with Mr. House on this - This is YOUR government, and YOUR tax money... The only way elected officials are going to be held accountable is if the public is first willing to make the effort to know what is going on.

However - I have received some adamant advice from someone over the past few months "Sweetheart! Sweetheart! It isn't going to happen, sweetheart!"

If the public will not pull together, it will not ever happen ...

Miss Vellone, if the board could see its way to a resolution to have the mayor duct-taped during public comment, I suspect that we would see more of the public speaking out.

In order for "open government" to work people must be willing to speak out. But the board also needs to provide an atmosphere where people feel their comments are valued and the board is willing to respond to questions raised. Unfortunately that has not been the case for the past year. With three minute limts for comments, interruptions while speaking, and never any answers, the exact opposite atmosphere has been created. Let's see whether the new board truly wants to hear from the public as stated in their letters. Let them create the kind of atmosphere that will promote communication.
