Letters to the Editor: Don't Judge A Show by Its Title

March 19, 2012

To the Editor:

As a child I was always raised on that saying of "Don't judge a book by it's cover," as most children are. Kids are taught to not judge a person based on their different clothing, disabilities, different religious beliefs, etc. Why then do kids, and even adults, still judge?

I have had the pleasure of being in the cast of Urinetown this year, and I am so lucky to have taken part in this experience. Imagine the dismay of the cast when we discovered the bad word going around town about our show simply because our title had the word urine in it. Part of what Cornwall has always been is supporting each other in each of the areas in which we excel. Why are we bringing down an incredibly talented group of students, when we should be supporting them?

The show has an awful title, I'll admit it myself, but behind that title is a witty, hilarious, touching, and informative show that is held together with absolutely beautiful harmonies and major dancing. The CCHS drama department is known for its shows that are over the top and powerful, and this year is no exception. Urinetown is an appropriate show for all ages, and is a show that most high schools wouldn't be able to pull off, and yet we are able to.

I'm asking all the people who are asking why we would do such a show, and why administration would allow us to do it, to remember that behind that ugly layer is something beautiful and rare. Theatre allows the audience to experience joy and true human emotions . Theatre allows people to grow and to have new experiences. Theatre changes lives. Please support your kids, neighbors, friends, and your local youth. Each time you step into a theatre you experience something new, even more so when you get to see your own local students perform.

Thank you for those who continue to support the drama program, because it honestly brings such joy and love into our lives. Thank you for your time and consideration, and I hope that the title of our show doesn't stop you from enjoying a truly remarkable work.

We are looking forward to seeing the show--with our kids!

Palaia Winery will continue to support the efforts of the Cornwall High Drama Department. Rich Aufiero and Tony Ravinsky have always worked hard to give each person in the show a great experience. They would not do a show that was not appropriate for the venue. We are 100% behind the drama department and always will be. Grow up people! These kids worked hard, and we will be there to support them, and the school. Jan Palaggi

This is an amazing production for all ages. These young people have worked long hours to bring this comedy to the local area and regardless of the title of the show, it is guaranteed to entertain one and all. PLEASE support the CCHS Drama Club.

Very well written letter! If I didn't see that the author was a student, I'd have surely thought the person was an adult. Nicely done. For the record I saw UrineTown some years ago in NYC. Despite the unfortunate title it was a very funny and entertaining play. Any detractors not going because of the title should hold their noses, go enjoy themselves, and support the kids who I am sure have worked tirelessly to make this a success. All the best!!

Hard to believe people would be against this production because of the title. What is this, Victorian England?

Amen to this brave, well-spoken student. I will be there, WITH my middle-schooler, to support CCHS Drama and to reward them for their hard work and talent with laughter and applause, of my own free will...Last I checked, we don't live in Urinetown...thank goodness!
