Town Backs Hospital Shift from Beds to Offices
St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital is applying to the state department of health for a HEAL grant to turn its two patient bed units into doctors’ offices and the town agreed Monday to send a letter in support of its application.
In the letter, the town notes that there has been “a steady decline in the need for hospital beds at the Cornwall campus.” The units that once housed 44 patient beds will be transformed into 14 medical practice office suites. In addition, the town supports renovating the hospital’s former cafeteria space in a central area for community education classes and conferences.
Bridge Street Work Set to Start
Nannini and Callahan won the contract to begin work on repairs on a retaining wall on Bridge Street. The excavating company came in with a bid of $83, 432, which was less than half of that proposed by the highest bidder. A total of three companies submitted bids.
The bridge that gave the street its name was closed in 2007 after the state Department of Transportation found structural problems with it. The town intendss to create a small pocket park on the end of the street where it flows into Main Street.
Comprehensive Plan Update Adopted
A year-and-a-half after a committee began a review of Cornwall’s 2005 Comprehensive Plan, the town board adopted the proposed revisions on Monday.
With the revisions, the committee recommends that the town address a number of issues, from creating an Historic District on Main Street to increasing parking spaces in the business district. The preservation of water quality, view sheds and wildlife habitats are encouraged, along with cluster housing to preserve open space.
