It’s official: if a dog is barking for fifteen or more minutes during the day*, or for 10 or more at night**, it’s too much.
That’s the decision of the Cornwall Town Board, which approved a new dog control law on Monday night.
If a resident is disturbed by a dog barking, howling or whining, a written complaint must be filed with the Cornwall police department and an officer will investigate.
Fines for the owner of a noisy dog range from $100 to $250, and could include imprisonment of no more than 15 days.
The new dog law also requires dog owners to clean up after their pet. Failure to curb a dog could lead to a fine of $50 to $75 for the first offense, up to $200 for repeated offenses.
* Day is defined as between the hours of 7 am and 10 pm.
** Night is defined as between the hours of 10 pm and 7 am.
