When more than 100 school children from Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary take the stage on Friday and Saturday they will be brilliantly dressed as a flock of ducklings and their friends the froglets, turkeys and snow queens to tell a tale of tolerance of someone who doesn’t fit in.
Honk! is a musical based on the Hans Christian Anderson story The Ugly Duckling. It opens in a farmyard, where Ida and Drake are waiting for , “What to Expect When You’re Hatching,” to sing a lovely solo about the joy of motherhood. Finally, a passel of ducklings emerge but the largest one is slow, and when the egg does crack, a large, ungainly bird, nicknamed Ugly, steps out.
Ugly Escapes Being Dinner and Is Piloted Home
The other ducklings reject Ugly, who knows he is different because he can’t quack like them but only honks. The sly Cat befriends Ugly but he’s got a hidden agenda – dinner! Ugly escapes in the knick of time but he still can’t find his way home.
A flock of geese pilots find the lost Ugly Duckling and as they sing “The Wild Goose Chase,” help bring Ugly home, where he finds his own true identity as a swan.
PTO Parents Ensure Shows Success
These year’s production of the COHES PTO Kids Drama Club is directed by theater veteran Karen Eremin, who is a master at channeling all the power of giggling children and volunteer moms and dads to light up the stage. Kirsten Rolon serves as musical director and Joanna Orkoulas oversaw the creation of the barnyard stage set. Dozens of other parents and friends helped create the costumes, show posters and stage direct to create two evenings of lively theater that will warm the audience’s hearts.
Performance Schedule
Honk! will be have two performances, both at 7 pm, on Friday and Saturday, March 9th and 10th, 2012 in the Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary Auditorium.
