Letters to the Editor: Local Law Will Cause Tax Increase

February 26, 2012

To the Editor:

Unless something is done, all village taxpayers will get an increase in their school and State, County and Town taxes starting September 2012.

It would be totally unfair to require the public to undergo the time, trouble and expense of seeking a referendum to stop the Local Law that abolished the village as a taxing assessing district. The better procedure would be for the Village Board to repeal or rescind Local Law or even easier just do not file the Local Law with the Secretary of State.

An article last week alluded to the Board being unable to come up with a grievance board of three people. There is nothing that would have prevented three Trustees from acting as the review board or as many Trustees as would be necessary if there were fewer than three citizens willing to serve. Consequently, the reason given for the Local Law was not factually or legally correct.

Gerald N. Jacobowitz

Comments:

Mr. Jacobowitz writes "the reason given for the Local Law was not factually or legally correct."

Neither factual nor legal correctness has ever been a major concern for this board majority.

In 1977 the village board abolished the separate tax roll and village assessor. The town assessment roll was adopted as the official tax roll for the village in order to reconcile inequities in the two jurisdictions. Apparently, that was changed at some time after 1977 by the board and lower tax assessments became the norm for certain village properties. The only tax increases for village properties will occur for properties with lower village assesments than the town assessments. Conclusions are your own.

I'm sure the following link will do nothing for most people here. You will see 2011 assessments and if you understand how an appraisal works you will see many glaring underpayments as well as overpayments on certain properties. You don't have to agree with me as this is my opinion but rest assured there are some people NOT paying what they should be while there are some overpaying.

Also the assessors job is a very tough one. He cannot actually get out and do a full appraisal on all properties(if he we a lic. appraiser) as there are not that many hours in the day. People should take a look at what some people in like houses are paying and decide what way to go. Those is "view preservation areas" are paying way too much in my opinion as when you do an appraisal the view counts very little.

Decide for yourself.

For those who don't understand ,since this didn't post as a hyperlink you will have to copy the http: and then paste it into your browser and hit enter in order to get the assessments.
