Letters to the Editor: My Views on Debt and the DPW Bldg.

February 21, 2012

To the Editor:

I have been accused of not wanting our employees in the DPW building. That is absolutely not true. We have an outstanding bond for that building with a balance of over $700,000 which will not be satisfied until 2020. We owe that money no matter what and we need to house the department and our equipment.

But, first and foremost, I want our employees to be safe in that building. I challenged the Board to do air quality testing which we did. The report shows some elevated readings and I have requested that we follow the NYSDEC suggestion to have them reviewed by the Orange County Health Dept. Why not? Our employees have families and spend many hours in that building.

I have also supported litigation regarding the DPW building. I don’t want the residents to pay for the building twice.

We have a four-page confidential letter from Cuddy and Feder, our attorneys. During the work session on Feb. 13, the Mayor said we would discuss it in executive session but we didn’t go into executive session. He closed the meeting and announced we would take it up February 27. I objected but it was over. We are paying for legal guidance but not following it. Why? Also, now that the NYS Comptroller’s Report has gone public, we all know that there is $207,000 unaccounted for from the original financial transaction with the Cornwall-on-Hudson Local Development Corporation. Three board members just approved $189,000 for structural renovations for the building. We need to find that money and use it to fix the building.

Write your letters and paint me as an obstructionist but I stand firm. We have choices and I won’t ignore them as I wouldn’t in my personal life. Yes, we need to fix the DPW building but not with a village check!

Barbara Gosda
Trustee
Cornwall-on-Hudson

Comments:

Barbara - You go girl!!

What I really like about this letter is that you directly address the accusations of being an obstructionist, and are willing to stand by your words and actions.

I really respect the fact that you do not waiver when you take a stance on an issue.

The DPW project is not the only way that taxpayer money is being mismanaged - The lack of a FIXED retainer for the lawyers, the funds transfers, and a slew of other issues outlined in the Comptrollers report. Each and every issue you have raised a voice demanding that the Village government reevaluate its actions to ensure protection of the taxpayers. Hopefully the public will take the time to see that you do not argue for the sake of arguing, but that you are arguing to protect them!

Trustee Gosda, you were asked the following question before but you had no answer. Lets see if you thought of one by now. If you are so concerned about the employees safety then why are you ok with them working in a garage that has been deemed more
unsafe then the highway garage?
