To the Editor:
"Were mistakes made? Yes." Mayor Coyne has a gift for understatement. In the full spectrum of the responsibility/ liability categories in the botched DPW building, "mistakes" would be just one notch up from the most benign category - Abject Stupidity. At the other end of the spectrum would be the darkest relative - Criminal Intent. What lies between these two extremes is a more likely culprit - Negligence. Given the sworn responsibility that those most directly involved with the project bore in protecting the public health and safety, as well as the taxpayer's pocketbook, the degree of negligence is undoubtedly high. There are just too many ways this municipal building falls short of the most basic acceptable standards in terms of site evaluation, construction, and fire safety. And it's ironic that those who have called attention to the multifaceted problems with this building are now being subjected to the most full-throated condemnation, and being portrayed as spiteful obstructionists.
I'm sure we all wish this mess never happened. And I'm equally sure that no one takes any delight in the fact the our DPW employees haven't got a proper place to work. In the end, as always, it will be the taxpayers who will be asked (or forced) to buy us out of this mess. It remains to be seen if taxpayers will get riled up enough to demand restitution for public money poorly spent. Could there be a class-action lawsuit in our future?

To get that Touchy-Feely-Good-Stuff back maybe another boulder and plaque is in order? Yup, that's the ticket to good governance.
