Cornwall Town Justice Joseph Thomson was remembered on Wednesday inside the courtroom where he presided over many cases during his 49 years on the bench. Judge Thomson passed away last month.
His friend and colleague Judge Frank Navarra held the ceremony to retire the American flag that hung in the courtroom for many of Justice Thomson’s cases. Former colleages, New Windsor Town Justice Richard Thorpe and former New York State Supreme Court Judge John McGuirk, also stood by.
In front of a regular Wednesday evening session of town court, with defendants and lawyers filling the seats in the room, town supervisor Kevin Quigley read a proclamation declaring March 24, 2012, Judge Joseph Thomson Day. Superivosr Quigley describes the deceased jurist as “a judge who was never judgmental and treated all in his courtroom with fairness.”
Judge Navarra revealed the depth of his connection with Judge Thomson, calling him a “fun and caring person with a great smile for people. He truly cared about the individuals who came before him.”
To end the brief ceremony, court officer Hector Torres folded the flag corner-to-corner, then handed it to Judge Thomson’s granddaughter, Casey Conklin as his daughters, Mary Lyn Conklin and JoAnn Thomson and grandson Patrick Conklin looked on.
