General News: Rumor of Violence at High School is Unfounded
February 10, 2012
By Nancy Peckenham
Classes are being held normally at Cornwall Central High School despite a flurry of rumors on Facebook and Twitter that led some students to skip school and some parents to take their children from classes this morning. The rumors stemmed from a threat of violence made by a student who was disciplined earlier this week.
Police chief Todd Hazard said that he learned about the rumors on Thursday and that they “spread like wildfire.” While police determined that the threat was invalid, Chief Hazard said that they provided a police presence at the high school this morning to reassure people.
School superintendent Timothy Rehm sent a recorded message to parents of high school students shortly after 9am on Friday in an attempt to reassure the community that the school is open and running an ordinary school day.
In the message, Superintendent Rehm described how the situation evolved. “A student has been disciplined for an issue of harassment,” he said in the message “Unfortunately, a student involved in the harassment has made some statements that are inciting and creating worry for some.”
The Superintendent said that the school district is working with the police and the families involved, noting that the students’ safety and welfare is the district’s primary concern.
Comments:
Had the school notified parents on Thursday there might not have been all the confusion and absences on Friday.
