Scouts prepare our Hero Packs last Saturday at the Scout Cabin.

To the Editor:
We are writing to express our sincere gratitude to this wonderful community for its support and generosity in our recent service project.
As Girl Scout leaders, we have children within our troops whose parents have volunteered to make significant sacrifices on our behalf by serving in the Army. Those parents are deploying to the Middle East in days and will be gone for at least a year.
To help the unit’s children with the separation, our scouts worked along with Operation Military Kids to create over forty Hero Packs for the children. The Hero Packs contained letters of support to the military children for their incredible sacrifices and included fun items to help the military kids stay in touch with their deployed parent.
The overwhelming response we received from everyone who we asked for assistance demonstrates, once again, how very special our community is. Thank you to the countless individuals who generously donated letters and items for the Hero Packs through the following businesses and organizations:
Cornwall Girl Scouts
Cornwall Boy Scouts
Cornwall American Legion
Cornwall Public Library
Willow Avenue School, Mrs. Berchielli’s Class
Willow Avenue School, Mrs. Tellefsen’s Class
Applebees, Newburgh

Association of the United States Army

Editor's Note: A group of Willow Avenue Elementary School students appeared at the farewell ceremony for National Guard Troops at the Peekskill Armory when the Hero Packs were presented last weekend. Here's a recording of the students singing "God Bless the USA" at the ceremony with Cornwall music teacher Karen Boden directing.
