General News: Judge Thomson Passes at Age 77
January 31, 2012
Less than three months after winning re-election to his 12th term as Cornwall Town Justice, Joseph Thomas passed away on Monday at the age of 77. He leaves behind three daughters and a career in law that included the title of longest-serving judge in the state of New York.
Back in 1963 when he was first elected, Cornwall Town Justice Joseph Thomson was the youngest judge in New York State. He graduated from Cornwall Central High School in 1951 and earned degrees from Cumberland and Stanford Universities. He worked for Allstate Insurance Companies for more than three decades.
Thomson, who hailed from Mountainville, was active in the community, serving as a member of the Elks Club, the Black Rock Fish and Game Club, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, as well as the Mountainville Engine and Highland Engine Companies.
He campaigned for re-election this fall from his rehabilitation bed at Helen Hayes Hospital, where he was recuperating from complications from surgery last summer. Despite his illness, he was re-elected, handily defeating Democratic challenger Lynn Beesecker.
