Letters to the Editor: I'm Running for Re-Election as Trustee

January 12, 2012

To the Editor:

I have picked up my petition to seek re-election to the Cornwall-on -Hudson Village Board.

In 2007, when I retired, I realized that I would have the time to give back to this community that I adopted as my home in 1972. With Bob’s blessing, I ran for the Board in 2008 and you overwhelmingly supported me. I was grateful and gratified.

Over the last four years I am most proud of the following:

Reducing our village debt

Reducing the cost of our police department while maintaining our own department with coverage 24/7

Stabilizing our building department with our own code enforcement cfficers

Introducing a new telephone carrier at a yearly savings of $10,000

Welcoming the NYS Comptroller’s Audit for accountability

Upgrading our Summer Playground Program with trips and activities at a reasonable cost to parents but not a burden to taxpayers

Continuing the Village Wide Yard Sale to build community & help businesses

Opening Rt. 218 with the “Hike & Bike” every Sunday from July thru November welcoming over 10,000 participants

Pressing the Board to secure an attorney to litigate the DPW to recover our losses

Hudson River Day and working with B.Smith-Gioia on the sculpture exhibit at Donahue Park all paid for with a county grant

Village Ethics Law for honesty and integrity

Supported Village Code on Line for accessibility

Supported the “Walkability Study” thru Orange County Planning Dept. to make Cornwall- on-Hudson a walking destination.

But even with all of these “positives”, there is still work to be done. We need to continue to be fiscally conservative. Also, I will work tirelessly to end the three-minute time limit introduced this year at Village Board meetings on residents. Residents should feel welcome and their input important. We need to change that.

Also, we need to comply with the regulations of the NYS DEC regarding our landfill, the DPW building and the dumping at Pagenstecher Park. Residents are expected to comply with our village code and all village actions need to be in compliance.

I have appreciated your support in the past and I am asking for it again. I have the time to do the job and I take it very seriously. Let me be your voice on the Village Board. Thank you!

Barbara Gosda
Trustee
Cornwall-on-Hudson

Barbara, I appreciate all your efforts. I know that at times it has been difficult but your integrity and your concern for the village are tremendous assets. With respect to the three minute rule - I think that if you want to increase it then 5 minutes is sufficient. If a person cannot state their concerns succinctly, clearly, and concisely in 5 minutes, then they need to think a little more before they speak anyway.
