To the Editor,
My name is Jan Smith and I am running for village trustee. I have lived in the village for almost 50 years, graduated from Cornwall Central High School, and raised our two children here.
I was employed by the United States Military Academy at West Point for 35 years as an accountant and auditor. As an auditor, I identified fraud, waste, abuse, and ways to increase efficiencies. Integrity and accountability were an integral part of my daily business and have always been an important part of my personal life.
We have faced another year with many problems in our small community. I have attended the village meetings and followed these issues. I would like the opportunity to work on the board and help bring proper solutions to these problems.
1 – First, we need to bring integrity back to this board. Though the DEC has instructed the village board they need to have approval to do any work on the DPW building, three board members have voted to take actions without the DEC’s approval. I will work to ensure this board acts in compliance with New York State laws and approval is received before any further action is taken. We cannot afford to waste money on a project that may not be approved and we should not put our employees at risk by having them occupy a building that is not safe.
2 –I will work to bring back open government to the village. I will work to eliminate the 3 minute restriction on public comment in regular meetings and reinstate the public comment sessions to the working meetings. This is your village and it is important that the board hear what you have to say. In addition, I will work to ensure that residents are treated with respect when they do approach the board with their concerns.
3- I will work to help control spending and develop a long range financial plan that will better prepare us to face the future. We need to be proactive, not reactive. The current board is proposing to increase the water, sewer, and the tax rate and negotiate another long term bond. The board needs to be more fiscally responsible.
I want to thank everyone who voted for me in the last election and I hope that I can count on your continued support this year. I wish you all a Happy New Year.

Comments:
Jan Smith is an asset that this village board critically needs. I support this candidacy and the fiscal experience and integrity that Jan Smith will bring to the government of this village.

Dave,
Thank you for your support. I believe that the budget is such a critical issue and I would as that everyone try to attend the public meeting on Monday, Jan 9th. Mark Edsall has mocked last year's budget as so outrageous on several occasions. Why is it then when I brought up the fact that some of the numbers were so bad he was not willing to make any changes but pushed through the budget as it was? When you are part of the problem I think you have to take resposnsibility for that too. Let's do a better job this year.
