General News: Storeowners Promote Small Business Saturday
November 26, 2011
By Charlie B. Scirbona
While Black Friday is one of the biggest shopping days of the year, the small cluster of shops on Main Street in the town of Cornwall looked quiet.
Only three of the four shops in the stretch of upper Main Street were open. The newest store, Around Back Consignment Shop, had a sign on the front door that wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and said the shop would be open for Saturday. The shop also had a sign promoting Small Business Saturday.
The sign referred to a pledge, sponsored by American Express, to support small businesses by choosing to shop at local businesses on the Saturday following Thanksgiving.
Small Business Saturday
Luann Richards, owner of Creative Gifts & More, which recently expanded into 294 Main Street, said she had been pretty busy Friday, and was looking forward to being just as busy on Saturday.
She also said she had a hand in making other businesses aware of aware of Small Business Saturday. Richards said she’d heard about the idea when it came about last year, but wanted to try and promote it this year. She added that she hadn’t done anything official, and just wanted the other businesses around her to know.
So far Richard’s attempt looks to be working, since ten other businesses on Main Street are supporting the Small Business Saturday. Richards said that promoting the event would also help neighboring shop Global Village Emporium, which sells handmade and vintage items from Iran and other nations. Hurray for Luann and Brid too! These two seemed to be the catalyst for revitalizing that long dead block in Canterbury. It's great to see lights on and doors open in our town. Good luck to all on this Small Business Saturday and remember to support our neighbors who know their products and can give you actual help when you are shopping. And an aside: Last week we needed a new printer so off to Staples, Office Depot? Nope, C.B. Merrill, only 5 miles from here, and I got lots of help w/no pressure to buy. The printer was cheaper than either big box store and there was no "up-selling" of product insurance plans, extended warranties, etc. just knowledgeable service. Great!

Thank you for mentioning small business Saturday! It's very important to support local businesses in in town! Bird,s Closet has been in Cornwall for several years now, and would not be here if it wasn't for the support of Cornwallis local community! Luann did a wonderful job of informing all of the businesses of this promotion! I could not ask for a better store and neighbor!
