General News: Village Drops Police Chief Candidate
November 24, 2011
By Charlie B. Scirbona
The search for a police chief in the village is back on.
Village Mayor Brendan Coyne confirmed Wednesday that the village Board of Trustees withdrew its offer to police chief candidate Richard Bunyan, following an executive session at the monthly business meeting Monday.
Coyne said that the reversal of the decision occurred because the board couldn’t work out some terms in Bunyan’s contract. The board had originally voted to approve Bunyan for the position in October, pending his contract. Coyne said the board would go back to a list of candidates provided by the county and begin the interview process again.
The village has been without a police chief for about seven months, since the mayor decided against rehiring former Police Chief Paul Weber. Weber had resigned in May in order to receive his pension from the city of Newburgh police department. Weber also retired from his the Newburgh force at that time.
