Letters to the Editor: Hike and Bike

October 20, 2011

To the Editor:
In an attempt to clarify the misconceptions brought forth at Monday, October 17th Village Board meeting regarding the Sunday Hike and Bike that allows pedestrians to have access to one of the most beautiful sights on the Hudson River in our own backyard, I must comment.

On October 2nd, a 5K/10K was planned for Route 218 to raise money for Parkinson’s research. The Hike and Bike was cancelled for this day to show support for this organization. However, many people chose to walk the mountain on their own.

Unfortunately, this caused some confusion and I was visited by Officer Pena at my home who expressed the Mayor’s outrage at this dilemma. As I explained to both Officer Pena and Mayor Coyne, this state road is open to the public and I will not police who has access.

Public support for the Hike and Bike is overwhelming and should continue as long as the State of New York allows. Many visitors have come to our village and recognized its beauty. Many have stopped in our shops and restaurants. Many return each week. This is good news!

When this new village board was elected in March, the motto was ”Consensus, Collaboration and Civility.” I still hold true to that motto and hope the rest of the board feels the same. Let’s work together like we promised the voters we would do.

Andrew Argenio
Trustee

Comments:

I would like to thank Mr. Argenio and the local elected officials who established Hike and Bike for us this year. It is a marvelous event and I hope that it continues next year. The dedication of these individuals is apparent since they were there every weekend welcoming hikers and maintaining order. I feel fortunate to live in this beautiful Hudson Valley and hiking up Rte. 218 to get an uninterrupted view of the Hudson River from its height is pure joy.
