General News: Village Hires Two Part-time Inspectors

The village of Cornwall-on-Hudson now has not one, but two, part-time building inspectors.
The Village Board of Trustees voted unanimously Monday to hire Benigno Maldonado of Cornwall and Benjamin Maggio as part time building inspectors and code enforcement officers.
Village Mayor Brendan Coyne said that the need for a second building inspector arose because Maldonado, who is an assistant municipal building inspector in the town of Monroe, a position he has held since 2006, would not always be available when needed. Maggio has been a private building contractor since 1988.
Village officials have been busy looking for a building inspector since June, when the town of Cornwall extended a temporary agreement to provide building inspection services. Officials report they went through about 35 applications and conducted three rounds of candidate interviews between July 18 and September 12 before settling with Maldonado and Maggio.
The board members made it clear that the two building inspectors will not work more than 20 hours a week collectively.
The post of village building inspector has been vacant since December when former Building Inspector Bruce Yancewicz resigned because the village had a statute requiring the building inspector to live in the village and he lives in Montgomery. That statute was changed in July to allow the hiring of a building inspector that lived within 30 miles of the village.
