Letters to the Editor: Question About the DPW Building

August 02, 2011

To the Editor

I would like to start off by thanking the people who have submitted questions regarding the DPW issue.

I have questions from several people at this point, some of which I am going to be sharing with you here.

For those who are wondering - my purpose is to try and get the public to actually have a voice to the Village Board – All of the Village Board, not just a select few. I feel that we elect representatives to do just that – represent the people. However, the public needs to be willing to get involved for that. So again, I thank the people that contributed input.

I have contacted Mayor Coyne asking to be allowed to address these comments at the August work session, and I have gotten a response. Mayor Coyne, thank you for getting back to me, I am confident that I will be allowed to address the public’s questions to our representatives.

Here are a few of the questions I have received from people:

1.) Why EXACTLY was the DPW building declared uninhabitable? (i.e. not just "because it's unsafe," but what are the specific faults that need to be remedied?)
2.) How much does grout pumping cost? Is this the cheapest fix?
3.) Why must a village of just over 3 square miles and a population of 3,000 need a million dollar dpw building?
4.) Is it possible that the Local Development Corporation bears any financial responsibility for the DPW building's faults, since the project was apparently done at their urging in the first place?
5.) Why hasn’t the Board instructed the Village Attorney to file a lawsuit against the architect and builder to recover the funds spent on the substandard building that failed within two years of use due to inadequate design and foundation work?
6.) How was the money for this project raised, and what was the initial projected cost?

I am trying to make this non-accusatory, but these are the questions that are being voiced. I think the fact that these are the types of questions coming in really says something – Can the Board help the public understand what happened?

If you would like to add some questions please email me at [email protected].

Again, I would like to stress that you can request to remain anonymous.
