Letters to the Editor: July Report from Trustee Argenio

July 13, 2011

To the Editor:

I’m glad to say that we are making progress in some areas. The progress is not across the board and some new problems have come up, but I do feel that we are making some headway. I will go down the July workshop agenda.

Assemblywoman Calhoun sent a letter regarding a Greenway Community grant that is available for the village through the office of the Hudson River Valley Greenway. Unfortunately, they are “matching “grants and for us to get $1 we have to spend $1 and we have no spare money.

We have scheduled interviews with candidates for the building inspector job for next Monday night.

I have volunteered to help the mayor coordinate with the police and the school district to solve the problem of increased criminal activity behind the elementary school (fights, lighting the table on fire, and more). We hope we can have the school establish a no trespassing time.

Interviews for the police chief have not been scheduled.

We are progressing on the “prep work” for water recovery and expect to have that work beginning in August.

The water fund ran short on money June 10th. (I was told on July 11.) We had to borrow from the general fund to make up for the shortfall. I am told we will have to take out a $350,000 RAN next week to cover expenses.

I’ve clearly expressed my views on the DPW building. Time is running out. If we had the engineering (we don’t) and if we went to bid in August (we won’t), we could hope to have the employees in by winter. We might award a contract in the middle of September. I cannot see fixing that building in 2 months and we don’t have the money to do the repairs. We need an interim solution now.

S.K.A.T. has moved their kayak race to New Windsor since they weren’t able to satisfy the village board's requests. I feel the village government put undue burdens on them, and we’ll lose potential local business in the long run.

We’re leasing a new copier (no cost analysis available)

The Mayor and Trustee Edsall are against spending an old, existing grant on an improved sidewalk at the bandstand that was dedicated for that purpose. The grant expires on July 31.

This is a partial list. More to follow.

Andrew Argenio
Trustee
Cornwall-on-Hudson

Comments:

Andrew,
The Greenway Grants are require matching funds. This can be in - kind contributions such as village staff time, volunteers etc. Contact Mark Castiglione at Greenway for clarification.

I was reading Mr Argenio's post. I am wondering as to who is running the village office. Shouldn't the village official comments come from the Mayor's office?
I feel that by posting own comments on behalf of the Village Mr Argenio is disrespecting the Mayor who was elected by us.

I would respectfully suggest that Vishwa attend a few board meetings to understand what would compel a board member to unilaterally communicate with the public-at-large. Personally, I'd be much more uncomfortable with silence.
