General News: Democrat Launches Bid for Town Judge
|
Attorney Lynn Beesecker is running for town justice. |
June 29, 2011
Democrat Lynn Beesecker has launched a campaign for Cornwall Town Justice, gathering signatures on a nominating petition that likely will pit him against long-time Republican judges Frank Navarra and Joseph Thomson in the November general election.
Beesecker is an attorney with an office on Main Street in Cornwall with 34 years of experience, including ten years serving as an arbitrator in civil court cases, an experience that he believes makes him well-qualified to become a town justice.
With nominating petitions due in three weeks, Beesecker is the only local Democrat who has decided to run for office. The town supervisor, two council seats, the town clerk and receiver of taxes are all up for re-election this year. Town clerk Elaine Tilford Schneer, a Republican, is running unopposed for re-election while supervisor Kevin Quigley is facing a challenge from fellow Rpublican Graham Kelder for his position. Betty Longinott and incumbent Kerry McGuinness are backed by the local Republican committee for the council seats while another incumbent, Randy Clark, has mounted a petition drive to get on the ballot for his council seat. Maryann Rose Odell is the Republican committee’s pick for the receiver of taxes.
Democratic committee chairman Arthur Davidson says that it is not easy to get Democrats to run because of the expense and time involved in the campaign. Davidson was the last Democrat to run for town justice. In 2003 he ran with Michelle Goldfrank for the two judgeships. They both lost.
Beesecker says that the time is ripe for a change and he believes his experience will make a difference. “I think I qualify,” Beesecker said in a brief interview on his way to umpiring a game at the Little League field. “It seemed like it was an opportunity and I have the interest in serving.”
