The baby fawn hid under a parked car at town hall. |
May 26, 2011
A baby fawn wandered around Cornwall Town Hall grounds on Thursday. Police were alerted to the animal's location by a concerned citizen and officers began looking for it in the area between the tennis courts and basketball with no luck.
Workers repainting the parking lot saw the officers and then began to look, finally finding the fawn beneath a parked car in the lot where someone took the attached photograph. Officers were able to get it to leave from under the car, reports police chief Todd Hazard, who adds "t ran off hopefully to be found by its mother."
Comments:
We've had this happen several times in the "very short" five years we've lived here. In fact, I've got pics of a doe birthing two in our back yard a couple years back.
What we've learned about the solitary fawns is that they aren't the orphans they appear to be; it's nature's version of day care. Mom parks them someplace "safe" while she forages for the day, then comes back at day's end.
But I'd bet it's yet another sign of the stress on the herd to find enough forage. So, once again, we're reminded of the reality that the herd is way too large for its own well-being.
