To the Editor:
Among the many programs and services the Cornwall Public Library provides there is one that touches our family deeply. It is the Timothy Mumford Memorial Poetry Competition, an opportunity for school-age poets to share their poems with their peers and an enraptured audience at the annual award ceremony. This year's ceremony, which was held Sunday in the library conference room was no exception. The poems were wonderful, the poets poised and confident, and the audience appreciative.
We want to thank the Cornwall Public Library for sponsoring this event named after our son Tim, who passed away at the age of 24, five years ago. He attended Cornwall schools, went on to NYU, graduating in 1999, with honors and with the additional honor of playing the piano at the NYU Gallatin School graduation ceremony at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center. One of his proudest achievements was winning the Orange County Poetry Competition, in 1999, where he was awarded a prize and given the opportunity to read his poem to the assembled guests celebrating Orange County Day.
We are grateful that our library has chosen to honor Tim in this way. He would be very proud to know that his passion for words has inspired other young people to put pen to paper and share their thoughts and feelings with the world. We especially want to thank Beth Texter, who puts this ceremony together so well each year, the board members who continue to support this endeavor with their backing and their presence, library director, Karen LaRocca Fels, and members of the library staff who attended this year's ceremony. Thanks also to the teachers who encourage their students to participate in this annual event. We are so grateful we live in a town where the library and the schools reach out, encouraging young people to express themselves creatively in poetry.
