Some members of the village board of trustees are fans of theater, or more specifically the Storm King Theater. During Monday's business meeting, Trustee Barbara Gosda and Mayor Brendan Coyne both talked about their desire to see the old theater up and running again.
Coyne and Gosda met with the building’s owner Ray Yannone on April 13 to talk about the possibility of getting the building reopened.
“The mayor approached me about reopening the theater and I said I absolutely would like to,” said Yannone.
Coyne said that getting the Storm King Theater operational again would bring vitality to the village.
“The theater could draw people to the village who also might eat at our restaurants, shop at some of the stores, buy gas, and maybe even rent a room over at Painter’s Tavern,” said Coyne. “This could be an economic catalyst for the village.”
Yannone said he doesn’t a potential tenant lined up for the space yet because he wants to get issues with parking and zoning out of the way before he markets the building to anyone.
Yannone bought the building in 1998 with the intention of renovating it to be a theater again. The building had previously been left in disrepair and was condemned. In January of 2008 Yannone went to the village planning board with a proposal to renovate the 2,700 square foot building.
At the time Yannone said many parties were interested in setting up shop in the space, which would hold 285 seats. Yannone explained that the building had originally had the capacity for about 400 people, but lost 30-35 feet when the building was subdivided.
He had also mentioned that the village board had told him they wouldn’t hold parking concerns against him. Coyne said that an agreement on parking will still have to be worked out, but didn’t have any details yet.
Yannone said that legal issues related to zoning laws had been major factor in holding up the process and hoped the village’s new administration would deal with any remaining issues quickly

Great suggestion. Suffern Theater is an excellent representation of community preservation and enhancement. Mr. Yannone Perhaps there could be an opportunity to involve youth in the decision making process. This would add ownership and pride for our next generation of Cornwall citizens.
