To the Editor:
The Cornwall Library does utilize volunteers. If you ever visit the library, you are likely to see them hard at work, many in the Friends Bookstore, which is solely staffed by volunteers and is responsible for raising quite a bit of money.
There are many other volunteers, young and old, who help keep the library humming, by assisting with summer reading programs, by cleaning and organizing the children's section, and by helping to re-organize and update other sections. In addition there are many community programs, usually run by volunteers, most free of charge.
The yearly visitor count is most likely based on the materials signed out, and probably does not include the many patrons who come in just to use the computers, to tutor, to purchase a second-hand book, or to attend a community program.
I'm quite certain that the library would appreciate your offer to help. After all, those returned books, magazines, videos, DVD's and CD's mean a lot of shelving. Or perhaps you'd like to become a Friend and help orgazine, shelve and sell the many books they receive each year. Looking forward to seeing you among the volunteers on my next visit.
Another way of looking at the statistics is to divide the yearly budget by the population of Cornwall. The cost is about $60 per person per year - approximately the price of 3 books at Barnes and Noble. What a bargain!
