To the Editor:
I would like to thank the residents of Cornwall-on-Hudson for not returning Doug Vatter to the Village Board. I may not have received my last insult from him but, hopefully, this will be a huge step toward restoring the civility that most residents want.
Clearly, not enough residents know what it has been like for me to serve with him on our Village Board. For example, in one instance when I attempted to discuss matters with him in Village Hall, he blasted me with his profanity. Many of you will recall that, after the death of my husband, Bob, he filed ethics charges against me as a "counterweight" to those which had been filed against him, then immediately admitted that there was no basis for his charges.
Following his final Village board meeting, in executive session, he screamed at me, calling me a “moron.” Then he wished an illness on me and continued his insulting diatribe. It may be hard to believe that people who have been elected to public office and taken an oath to serve could behave this way but that is indeed what it has been like for me to serve with Doug Vatter on our village board. Instead of bringing a sense of respectability and decorum to the forum, it has been disdain and arrogance. I don’t think any resident ever expected or would ask me, or any other member of the board, to serve under these conditions. I certainly never thought I would have to.
Going forward, I pledge to work cooperatively with our new mayor and trustees to give this Village a board that will maturely take on the many serious issues facing the Village. Thank you.
Barbara Gosda
Deputy Mayor
Cornwall-on-Hudson
