To the Editor:
I think we need to ask ourselves if a salary freze for teachers is actually fair. As I understand it, the contract agreed to by the teachers is as follows:
The contract covers a four-year span dating back to July 1, 2010. It provides salary increases of 1.75 percent (July 2010), 1.50 percent (July 2011), 1.50 percent (July 2013) and 2.00 percent (July 2014).
This is not a significant increase. When one looks at the fact that their own property taxes are increasing and fuel and food all cost more than when this contract was negotiated, they are not getting rich with this low cost of living adjustment.
The education of our children is the most important thing we can do to remain competitive in the global economy. We need to invest in education and hire and retain quality teachers. We need to look at cutting spending on sports before we cut spending on Reading, Writing and Arithmetics
