General News: Community Labyrinth Project Begins In April

A months-long project to raise funds to build a labyrinth at The Grail Center is nearing its culmination as project coordinators prepare for construction on Saturday and Sunday, April 9th and 10th*, when the public is invited to pitch in to lay down the stones that will create the circular pattern of the labyrinth.
The project is being coordinated by artist Barbara Smith Gioia, who is also a member of The Grail’s local advisory group. The Grail Center is a retreat, conference and educational center located on 45 acres between Duncan Avenue and the Boulevard in Cornwall-on-Hudson.
Grail members have been working to open its programs, with a focus on the environment, personal growth and spirituality, to the public and conceived the Labyrinth Project to offer the community a place to visit and reflect. When walking the turnings of a labyrinth, one loses track of direction and of the outside world, and thus quiets the mind.
Terry Murray, a professor of humanistic and multicultural education at SUNY New Paltz, designed the labyrinth based on a 16-century model in Oxford, England. It will be constructed using stone and mulch to ensure a long-term low-maintenance future.
Barbara Smith Gioia has been spreading the word about the project, leading a workshop at the Cornwall Public Library, where small finger labyrinths were constructed. She also organized the Serpentine Serenade benefit concert held on March 12 at The Grail and is curating a sculpture exhibit that will be placed along the trails leading to the labyrinth in May. Earlier this month, she made a presentation to a group of artists in Warwick who chose her idea for the Labyrinth Project and Grail Trail Sculpture Exhibition, along with that of another artist, to split a $230 kitty.
