General News: Cuffe Places in World Competition
March 20, 2011
Aisling Cuffe led the U.S. team in the women’s Junior IAFF World Cross Country Championships, finishing the six kilometer course in 21:13 to place 17th in the international competition held Sunday in Spain.
Faith Chepngetich Kipyegon of Kenya sprinted to victory in the race, running barefoot to cross the finish line in 18:53. Ethiopian runners Genet Yalew and Azemra Gebru finished second and third.
Cuffe, a senior at Cornwall high school, spoke in her characteristically thoughtful manner after the race, noting that she had managed to come in with the top 20 runners. “I have a lot of work I need to do to get where I want to be when I get older. This experience will help motivate me for the rest of my life,” Cuffe told USA Track & Field. “I want to get back here when I am a senior (runner).”
