Letters to the Editor: Questions about Route 218, Park Expansion
March 19, 2011
To the Editor:
In polite--I hope--response to Andrew Argenio, I think there are many more important things to do than close 218 and improve Donahue Park, and I'd hope that he'd turn his commendable efforts in other directions.
Route 218 is a nationally known scenic roadway, and people come from many miles around to drive it, especially on weekends. Closing it for even just a day will outrage them, and rightly so: it's not "Cornwall-on-Hudson's road." You might also ask several Hudson Street businesspeople who depend at least in part on drop-in traffic from 218 tourists how they feel about it being closed it on a very busy day. It's an idea that should quickly be forgotten.
As for Donahue Park, it's a nice-to-have and not a need-to-have, particularly in these trying times. It's also in good shape as it stands, no need to paint the lily. I agree with Andrew on the parking permits. In fact, I don't think there should be -any- parking permits needed. We sit snobbishly down here putting up barriers to The Dreaded Outsiders, while Newburgh, Garrison, Cold Spring, Beacon and New Windsor welcome everyone to their waterfronts. We should do no less.
