To the Editor:
Voting… a basic right provided by the United States Constitution and the only means by which each person’s voice is guaranteed to be heard. I never thought that this would be an issue, especially in our small village.
When I read the letter from Robert Anderson and found that his absentee vote would not be counted in this election, I contacted the Orange County Board of Elections to see if there was anything that could be done to remedy this situation. Unfortunately, their answer was no. They could not accept an email or other automated form of voting so Robert Anderson will not be allowed to vote this year. But I have to wonder if his is the only vote that will not be counted. Are there others that got lost because… once again… the village did not have a set of internal controls to ensure accountability for their documents? Missing documentation has led to many of the problems that we, the villagers, are currently facing. Will there be other residents whose voice will not be heard and whose vote will not be counted? We’ll never know for sure.
For those of you who will be in the village tomorrow…please vote. You have the ability to make a difference and, unlike Robert Anderson, your voice can be heard. Don’t take your vote for granted.
