Letters to the Editor: Fiscal Prudence Over Expensive Promises

March 14, 2011

To the Editor:

Please allow me to go beyond the detailed legal points put forth in some recent letters and put our upcoming Village election in a broader perspective.

Over the years we elected an engineer who promised us engineering expertise, and we got a DPW building with an embarrassing number of expensive engineering defects. Then we elected an attorney who promised us legal expertise, and we got a questionably appointed law firm that threatens to run our budget through the roof. Now we have a Mayoral candidate who promises us harmony and consensus by sweeping these expensive mistakes under the rug without mentioning, or maybe not quite realizing, that it may cost us $475,000 or more to do so.

So, whether we are voting as individuals or as members of a voting bloc, all of us, as residents, volunteer firemen and Village employees are adversely affected when candidate’s promises become expensive mistakes. And like him or not, Mayor Gross is committed to correcting those mistakes by taking prudent steps to erase the law firm selection and their outrageous bills from our books and to making those responsible for the DPW building defects pay for their repair and reimburse us for cost of their oversights.

Also consider that the new Trustee candidates, Argenio and Smith offer a refreshing change from the dysfunctional nature of the current Board. They are extremely well qualified, fiscally responsible individuals who are free of any hint of conflicted interests and if elected along with Mayor Gross, they will produce the civility and productivity we all want from our Village government without us having to pay a king’s ransom to achieve it.

Ultimately, I believe that whatever our individual points of view, we all want the best for our Village. And just as we plan and spend wisely within our own households, we must require the same from our elected officials.

So on Election Day, Tuesday March 15th, we have the privilege to vote for those who will lead us during the challenging times ahead, and clear opportunity to choose fiscal prudence over expensive promises.
