To the Editor:
Last year Village residents elected Jim Kane, someone we hardly knew, but who made a deal with Trustees Edsall and Vatter to deliberately and systematically wreak havoc and disorder on us. And now, having carried nominating petitions for them, it appears as though Candidate Coyne has negotiated to do their bidding as Mayor. Through their reckless and irresponsible schemes, the Trustees have put the Village in chaos at a time when the decisive action of the entire Board was critical to addressing the problems of the DPW building. And for what? Why would Edsall and Vatter publicly humiliate our code enforcement officer and attempt to coerce him into re-opening the DPW building when the highest level state engineers told us it was unsafe and then reduce his schedule to five minutes a week? Why would they resist testing the highly questionable soil underneath the building for months, until the architect they hired, who had a relationship with Mr. Edsall’s firm, told us to do so? Why would the three Trustees insist on hiring an attorney that has a conflict of interest with the firm that duped us when the building was constructed and then willingly agree to pay these attorneys three times what we budgeted? Why would they not have counsel review $50,000.00 worth of proposals and contracts to re-design and engineer the same building?
I have come to realize that this has been nothing more than an attempt to cover up the mistakes of the past at our expense, we have already paid too much money for a building we can’t use. They even paid their attorney to silence the Ethics Board, harass the code enforcement officer to resign and prevent me from doing my job as the CEO of the Village. We have serious business to attend to.
We need to immediately:
Provide our DPW and Water Dept. employees with a workplace that is safe and affordable.
Hire an attorney we can trust and afford.
Provide police and fire protection that is tailored to our needs and within our means.
Continue to defend our water resources, including the threatened Taylor Road well field.
Hire our own code enforcement officer to keep our neighborhoods safe and attractive.
Finish the work we started on improving the three dangerous intersections (including Duncan/Hudson Street) to which the three Trustees are opposed.
Finalize and implement the recently released plan to improve Donahue Park.
Continue reducing the debt and streamlining services so that we afford to address our future needs so that we can maintain our separate and unique identity.
On March 15, 2011, we need to elect people who care about doing what’s right for the greater good of our Village. I urge all of you to reflect on the events of the past year, to understand what is really going on, and help me do what needs to be done to set our Village right.
Thank you.
Joseph J. Gross
Mayor
Cornwall-on-Hudson
