To the Editor:
For over three years we have regularly attended working and regular meetings of the Village Board. We witnessed the deterioration of the Board's ability to function when the current majority, Trustees Edsall, Vatter and Kane, took control a year ago. It was then that the rancor, personal insults and other nastiness began. Like other Village residents, we'll be glad when that period is behind us.
Here's who we're voting for, and why:
Jan Smith: calm, quiet, strong, a steadying force. Her years of experience in auditing will help the village keep our finances on track. She can analyze data (dollars, numbers or minutes of meetings) and spot patterns, trends and problems. She has a commitment to open meetings and making information public, as well as doing things the “right” way and the courage to do it.
Andrew Argenio: willingness to work, creative ideas, up-to-date technological knowledge. His knowledge of recycling and waste disposal will literally as well as figuratively turn garbage into gold. He filmed Village meetings and put them on YouTube for us all to see. Thanks, Andrew.
Joe Gross: not a slick politician – but he stands up for what he believes is right for the Village, despite this past year's deliberate campaign of personal attacks and insults. When elected four years ago, he promised to change the “spend now and pay later” pattern of past administrations – and he has. As mayor he opened up meetings and the decision making process (until overruled a year ago, when two of the three public comment periods were snatched away by our current majority). He has shone a spotlight on past mismanagement and cronyism and caught the brunt of reaction for doing that. If you don't like the message, some would attack the messenger – and they have. But he has held out for doing things legally – and not having the taxpayers pay and pay for old and new mistakes.
His opponent has said little other than he would run calm meetings. Since his slate-mates are the source of the uproar – we assume he should be able to do just that. He has this book “How to Win a Local Election”, and says he keeps it under his pillow. Is there another book for him: “How to be Mayor of Cornwall-on-Hudson”? Come on, we villagers deserve better than this.
