Letters to the Editor: Election Tears at Village Fabric

March 11, 2011

To the Editor:

Traditionally, business owners remain neutral to political opinion, but we at My Valet Fine Dry Cleaners find this election is truly tearing at the fabric which makes Cornwall-on-Hudson special, so we openly share our thoughts.

We planted our roots in Cornwall over eight years ago because our community represents where it’s best to grow a family and to invest: a close knit community where you find the American flag flying tall, schools are the foundation for lifelong friendships, children play freely in our streets, hot summer days bring cold ice tea stands around any corner, and neighbors greet with a friendly wave and smile, or casually meet at the local restaurant, shop, recital, or at Sunday’s church service.

As business owners we believe this special “neighborly quality” is what distinguishes our local shops from outside businesses and intrinsically attaches our stores to our greater Cornwall community.

Sadly, disagreements have become very contentious and have elevated the political debate to an acrimonious level. This election, voters can send a clear message to help our community, as good neighbors, rise above these differences: Our government representatives should be able to have neighborly, intelligent, but heated, debate, able to present diverse positions within an environment where old ideas are questioned, new are welcomed, public comment invited, and consensus found, on how to continue building on our past to help advance our future.

Most importantly, in the end, all parties after any exchange or business meeting should be able to visit the local Café and sit for coffee at the same table. This is the Cornwall Community Spirit that attracts and we so cherish!

We know public service is not easy; it requires a great commitment, an unselfish dedication, especially in the face of what at times appears like unfair criticism, not to mention the many hours away from family. So we thank all our public servants and candidates for so generously giving. We are grateful!

Although as a business we do not vote in the Village election, we also have a vested interest to preserve our community spirit. After listening to the candidates present their views at Munger cottage this past week, we came away with the following questions to ask our friends:

1. Which candidates showed most passion, and which candidate would most likely keep the status quo?
2. Which candidates support open and transparent government, and truly welcome public opinion?
3. Which candidates bring the greatest diversity of experiences, built on proven successes?
4. Which candidates have demonstrated a true commitment to curb costs, & taxes?
5. Which candidates defined a clear vision of growth & progress for our Village?

The fabric of our community is strengthened by the good spirit we as individuals promote and try to preserve. So, we ask all our friends to please come out and vote on Election Day. A strong voters’ turn out will show support for all the candidates; but most importantly, will clearly define the community expectations to help advance our Village.
