To the Editor:
It is very unfortunate, but not surprising, for Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson residents that Mayor Gross has chosen to once again put his personal agenda ahead of, and in detriment to, the business of the Village and its’ residents. In my short tenure as Trustee, the Mayor has established a pattern of not accepting the majority vote, (unless, of course, he is one of the majority); ignoring majority decisions and the law; acting in contravention of majority decisions; and exercising a veto power which he does not possess under state, village or local law, by refusing to pay vendors for Village work.
When you look at the Mayor’s refusal to pay the architect and engineers for work performed months ago toward correcting the problems to the DPW building, his refusal to accept the resignation of the former Building Inspector, his most recent refusal to sign the Intermunicipal Agreement with the Town for code enforcement/inspection services, and his endless conspiracy theories, his latest desperate act of filing of an Article 78 should not come as a surprise to anyone. It is just another example of it’s "his way or the highway” management of the Village business. Fortunately, despite the Mayor’s attempts at absolute rule unrestricted by law, facts, or transparency, Trustee Edsall, Trustee Vatter and I continue to represent the people of the Village, not the Mayor’s personal agenda.
For those Village residents who believe that our form of local government is a dictatorship; it is not. For the overwhelming majority of Village residents, I apologize that we must now spend time and funds on protecting our Village from the Executive who wants to treat it like a dictatorship.
James P. Kane
Trustee
Cornwall-on-Hudson
