Letters to the Editor: Do Trustees Practice Civility?

March 11, 2011

To the Editor:

Last Friday, I was the lucky recipient of Trustees Edsall and Vatter’s political mailer. Imagine my surprise to find out that I was one of Mayor Gross’ cronies on the Ethics Board. It does amaze me the contempt these Trustees seem to have towards the Ethics Board. Why are they so threatened by a board that is in place to ensure good governance?

According to Webster’s dictionary the definition of crony is “a close friend especially of long standing”. The funny thing is that I did not know Mayor Gross before I was appointed to the Ethics Board and I have never done anything socially with Joe Gross. However, it does make me wonder: is Trustee Edsall the crony of Trustee Vatter, and vice versa? After all, they are sharing political signs and mailers together. Is Mayoral Candidate Coyne a crony of Edsall and Vatter? My understanding is that he collected signatures for both trustees. Is Trustee Kane a crony of Edsall and Vatter? They seem to all vote as a block on most issues. I ask these questions because I don’t know the answers and since I don’t know the answers I am not willing to actually call them cronies. Too bad Trustees Vatter and Edsall did not show the same respect to the Ethics Board before they called us cronies.

These trustees can’t have it both ways. You cannot say you are for open democratic government and then vote to limit comments from the public. You cannot attack your political opponents and then cry “foul” when people push back. And you cannot call someone a dictator while you are acting like a dictator yourself.

These trustees can talk about the lack of civility in the Village government, but have they practiced civility themselves? If they have, I haven’t witnessed it.
